There’s a conversation to be had about Arne Slot, about the performances, about whether we’re trending the right way. But it only works if it stays on the football. You can question choices, shape, game management, any of it. Personal stuff? Pointless.
Because the wider point is this: Liverpool have never been a side that turns up every single week and blows teams away 3-0 or 4-0 like it’s nothing. We’ve had spells, we’ve had runs, we’ve had those days where it all looks inevitable. But “thrash everyone, every week” has never really been the standard, even in great seasons.
Most title sides win ugly more than we admit
When you watch Manchester City or Arsenal from a distance, you mainly clock the results. You don’t always sit through the awkward 1-0, the late scramble, the bit where they’re hanging on under pressure and the crowd is edgy. But it happens. Loads.
And that’s why it’s worth remembering: teams only truly “click” a small number of times in a league season. Everything feels sharp, the press lands, the final ball is right, and you’re 2-0 up before anyone’s got their breath. It’s brilliant, but it’s not weekly life. Weekly life is a grind, and the table is built on the days you’re not flying.
We’re improving, but we’re not out of the woods
That’s where the concern comes in. From a form and performance point of view, it can still feel like we’re a bit too fragile within games. Not always, not every minute, but often enough to notice. The improvements are there, to be fair. You can see bits of structure, bits of calmer possession, moments where Liverpool look like they know exactly what they’re trying to do.
But the tough months are when it tests you. That’s when you need the experienced heads, the ones who’ve been through title races and European nights, to take hold of matches that are starting to tilt. Slow it down. Win a foul. Keep the ball for a spell. Put the game back in our rhythm.
Champions League is the minimum target
And honestly, that’s the crux. Champions League qualification has to be the baseline this season. Everything else is nice, everything else is a bonus, but that’s the line in the sand. If Liverpool can get that done while the football continues to settle under Slot, you take it and move forward.
Because not every week will be a statement. Sometimes it’s just about getting through.
