First Semenyo, now Guehi. Two deals that, in the mind of a lot of supporters, feel straightforward. Two players who could improve us quickly. And yet we’re here again, watching Liverpool stand still while the season keeps moving.
I’d love to be the calm one about it, but it’s difficult. Not because anyone’s asking for fantasy signings or a scattergun window. More because the basics are staring us in the face: we’re short at the back, we’re running players into the ground, and the margins in the league don’t wait for us to “evaluate”.
The defensive depth problem isn’t new
The frustrating bit is how predictable this has been. When you look at the natural centre-backs, it doesn’t exactly scream security. Konate, Gomez and Van Dijk as the established options, with Van Dijk asked to play far too often because we don’t trust the rotation. That’s the reality, and it’s a dangerous one when you’re trying to finish strongly.
If you’re constantly one knock away from an emergency reshuffle, then every fixture becomes consequential. Even the “inconsequential” ones. The knock-on effect is obvious: players who should get a breather don’t, and the next time we need them at full tilt, they’re already carrying too much load.
Versatility matters when the calendar bites
Supporters aren’t asking for perfection. They’re asking for cover. The idea of someone like Guehi, who can operate across the defensive line, appeals because it solves multiple issues at once. That kind of flexibility is exactly what you need when you’re juggling form, fitness, and the weekly churn of Premier League games.
And it’s not just centre-half. If you feel exposed at right-back too, then you start seeing the season as a series of workarounds rather than a plan. That’s when the anxiety kicks in, because you can’t build consistency on makeshift solutions forever.
The football has to match the ambition
What makes it worse is the sense that we’ve drifted into a style that doesn’t suit the talent available. With the creativity, energy and class in the squad, it’s hard to accept long spells of slow, side-to-side football where everything feels laboured.
People can point at an unbeaten run, and fair enough, results matter. But narrow wins and draws only take you so far if the underlying feeling is that we’re grinding without control. Meanwhile, City and Arsenal don’t stand still. They stretch away. That’s the gap you end up chasing for months.
So the worry isn’t one missed signing. It’s the bigger picture. What’s the plan, exactly? Because if there isn’t one, we’re not building towards winning things. We’re just hanging around the edges, hoping to cling onto fourth. And Liverpool should never be happy with just participating.
One thing this situation always highlights is how quickly “depth” turns into “first choice”. In a busy Premier League season, you don’t rotate because you’re being kind. You rotate because tired legs cost points, and points decide everything from momentum to league position.
